SPRO aims to provide home baristas with tools for success while creating a space that fosters learning and builds confidence. Whether you’re new to espresso or have some experience, SPRO is designed to fit seamlessly into your routine.

When paired with Fellow’s Tally Pro Scale and Ode Grinder, SPRO makes mastering espresso at home a breeze. As users focus on pulling the perfect shot, SPRO will collect key metrics such as weight, grind size, and pull time while providing visual feedback. Although understanding these metrics is only one aspect of preparing great espresso, SPRO’s main purpose is to create a foundation for growth through visual and written guidance.

Design Research

Pulling the perfect shot of espresso is no easy feat. Keeping track of metrics, in addition to understanding what they are and how they influence a shot, can be an intimidating experience for new baristas. Our research consisted several 1:1 guided discussions, observational studies, competitive analysis, and an online survey of 10 participants. High effort, low impact

Understanding data
Even with the help of existing apps, many beginners struggle to know what the different variables mean and what to do with their data once collected.

Design Process

After gathering our insights, we then needed to brainstorm to figure out exactly what aspects of home espresso we wanted to tackle and how. With a design direction selected, we began to map out user flows and the general architecture for our companion app. Within a nine week span, we created a clickable prototype, workbook showcasing our design thinking and process, supplementary posters, and prototype video.
