Overview

What makes the streaming experience so special is not only the act of engaging with the media itself, but also being able share that experience with others. Streaming platforms such as Netflix offer a unique opportunity to connect users through media they love at any time, in any place. With the transition from theatres to home-viewing, virtual watch parties have emerged as a popular social experience. Through Streamshare, we explore the opportunity to make streaming more exciting and meaningful through collaboration and social interaction.

Design Research

While watch parties offer excellent opportunities for connection at a distance, the reality is that they're often a pain to set up. Netflix users have to go through third party services and extensions, creating room for difficulties such as inefficiency, lagging, and system crashing. In creating a Netflix-specific watch party feature, we hoped to...

Eliminate the need for a third party
In cutting out the middle-man, we hoped to create a smoother streaming and media sharing experience for users.

Foster connection between users
Creating space for watch parties makes it easier for users to share the streaming experience with others while overcoming barriers of physical distance.

Design Process

After taking a look at some existing solutions, we began our ideation and design process by asking ourselves where this feature would live within the mobile Netflix UI and what it might look like to create or join a session. We later shifted our focus to desktop screens and began designing flows beyond the entrypoint. Within a span of 4 weeks, we created medium fidelity wireframes and conducted several user tests, resulting in a clickable prototype showcasing three main user flows: navigating the entry point, utilizing settings and key features, as well as pausing and resuming/catching up via the media player.

User Testing

We met with two participants to inform our design decisions as we worked from medium to high fidelity prototypes. User research and testing consisted of think-aloud sessions and semi-structured interviews. During these conversations, our participants informed us of existing pain points in our prototypes and what kinds of features they would like to see going forward.
